Waive

If you do not want the Student Health Insurance Plan, you must decline or opt-out of coverage by submitting a waiver. You may only opt-out of coverage during the following Waiver Periods:

Students will be enrolled in the plan unless you submit a waiver

All domestic students are required to enroll in D'Youville's Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) . The insurance fee will be charged to students' accounts. If you have alternative health insurance coverage, you may waive your enrollment in the SHIP.

To waive the SHIP, D'Youville University requires that students provide proof of coverage comparable to the coverage provided by D'Youville’s SHIP. Please be advised that the waiver request will be reviewed and verified active with the insurance carrier. 

Waiver Requirements:

  1. Coverage must be active with the expectation that coverage will continue for the rest of the academic year 8/1/26 - 7/31/27.
  2. Coverage must be issued by an insurance company based in the U.S.
  3. Coverage must be ACA-compliant, meaning your plan:
    • Does not have limitations or exclusions for pre-existing conditions.
    • Provides the 10 Essental Health Benefits required by the ACA.
    • Does not have per year or lifetime benefit maximums on the Essential Health Benefits.
  4. Coverage must allow the insured student to receive routine medical care within a 50 mile radius of the Buffalo, NY campus (plans that only cover emergency care will not be accepted).

The following types of plans do not meet the above criteria:

  • Out-of-state Medicaid
  • Out-of-state HMOs (including Kaiser Permanente HMOs)
  • Healthcare Sharing/Ministry Cost Sharing Plans
  • International Plans
  • Travel Plans
